5 Museums You Can Explore From Your Couch

One of the rare bright spots of 2020 was how much we started thinking about ways to experience good stuff around the world when we can’t hop on a plane.

There is now an enormous and growing list of the world’s most iconic museums offering their whole collections digitally, offering online tours, or working with Google Arts And Culture to offer virtual walking tours through Google Street View. If you haven’t clicked around a few of them yet, you really ought to. It’s seriously cool, and very much the next best thing when wandering the real space isn’t an option. You can also follow the Twitter and Instagram hashtags #museumfromhome and #museummomentofzen for an ongoing feed of calming artwork.

HERE ARE SOME OF OUR FAVORITES

  • The British Museum, London

The British Museum has the coolest interface to view their collection. Instead of flipping through slides, you can zoom through an interactive timeline of human history across continents. It’s a ton of fun to poke around, and such a cool resource to engage kids (or 36 year olds) in history.

  • The Frida Kahlo Museum, Mexico City

In addition to browsing the whole collection of work, the Frida Kahlo Museum offers four different virtual tours through the grounds, so you can stroll through the artist’s studio and gardens and stay in your yoga pants.

Call us biased, but one of our favorite ways to spend a day in DC is wandering the National Gallery. They are offering some very cool virtual exhibits right now, including a really in-depth article/exhibit on the history of American fashion that we really enjoyed!

Not much can make me feel more calm and full of joy than feasting my eyes on room after room of dreamy impressionist masterpieces. Fill your soul with a leisurely stroll through this stunning space, and you won’t even have to worry about running head first into a 30-person tour group waving their selfie sticks in front of the Monets.

Sometimes a museum is less about the collection (which in this case is constantly rotating between all branches of the foundation’s museums worldwide), and more about the experience of wandering through a jaw-dropping space. This virtual tour actually lets you twirl your way down that iconic staircase.
